Location-Based Routing Compliance Set by FCC - Are You Ready?

Written by Lauren Kravetz, VP of Government Affairs | Mar 13, 2024 10:52:51 PM

Location-Based Routing (LBR) just got more real. The compliance timeline has been set.

For voice calls, nationwide wireless providers must support location-based routing for wireless 911 voice calls on their IP networks by November 13, 2024.  Non-nationwide wireless providers must support location-based routing for wireless 911 voice calls on their IP networks by May 13, 2026.

For real-time text, all wireless providers must support location-based routing or real-time text communications to 911 originating on their IP networks by May 13, 2026.

PSAPs and providers may agree to alternate timelines, as long as they tell the FCC within 30 days of making the agreement.

Intrado developed and has deployed a proven location-based routing solution with a major carrier - Locate Before Route. The solution helps providers comply with the FCC’s new rules:

  • Taps full capabilities of 911 caller’s handset to acquire an accurate position

  • Reduces overall 911 response times by sending calls directly to the correct PSAPs

  • Reduces 911 call misroutes, particularly along emergency services border areas

  • Dramatically improves positive emergency outcomes for wireless 911 callers
