Central Office

Definition:

A telephone switching center that contains the equipment to provide phone service to users in a particular geographic area. A central office may serve more than one prefix; there may be more than one central office located in the same building. Central Office equipment is primarily switching equipment that routes calls, provides dial tone, busy signal,
and ringing. Also known as End Office.
