You Are Not Alone: Recognizing 988 Day of Awareness

Every year, communities across the country pause to recognize National 988 Day of Awareness, a date chosen deliberately, echoing the three digits that have become a lifeline for millions of Americans. It falls during Suicide Prevention Week, a time dedicated to open conversation, education, and reducing the stigma that too often keeps people from asking for help.

A Number That's Making a Difference

Since its launch in July 2022, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has connected people in crisis with real support, day or night, by call, text, or chat. In the years since, awareness of the number has grown steadily, and more people than ever know where to turn when they or someone they love is struggling.

There's also growing evidence that the Lifeline is improving outcomes, a reminder that behind every conversation is a life, a family, a community.

Why This Day Matters

Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States. But awareness saves lives. Every time someone learns that help is just three digits away, every time a friend shares the number with someone who's struggling, every time a workplace or a school talks openly about mental health, that's progress.

988 Day of Awareness is a simple reminder: you don't have to wait for a crisis to learn about 988, and you don't have to face one alone. Save the number. Share it with someone you love. Talk about it in the break room, the classroom, the group chat.

If You or Someone You Know Is Struggling

Call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org, anytime — free and confidential support is available 24/7.
