Employee Spotlight: Charles Gifford, Intrado VP of Information & Cybersecurity

At Intrado, we believe that the strength of our cybersecurity program lies not just in our technology, but the people who lead it. One of those leaders is Charles Gifford, our Vice President of Information and Cybersecurity, whose journey into the world of IT and cybersecurity is as inspiring as it is unconventional.

From Space Camp Dreams to Cybersecurity Leadership

Charles’ passion for technology began during his childhood in Dayton, Ohio, where his father worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and specialized in electronic warfare. “I got my analytical skills from my dad, he was known as ‘Old Crow’ and my people skills from my mom,” Charles shared. Though he originally wanted to attend space camp in sixth grade, his father sent him to computer camp instead, unknowingly setting his path toward cybersecurity.

With a background in sociology and police work, Charles started building computers for friends at church. That hobby led to an internship at a local Aerospace firm, where he started as an intern at the Dayton office while still in college. “I didn’t even realize how blessed I was when I was hired out of college,” he said. The early 2000s brought persistent cyber threats from global adversaries, and Charles was hooked. He earned his master’s degree in Maryland and has now been in cybersecurity for over 20 years.

Leading in a Rapidly Evolving Field

Charles explained that the most challenging part of cybersecurity today is the evolution of AI. He believes AI helps us with user behavior analytics but also empowers attackers to move faster and smarter.  While dwell times for detecting breaches has decreased, the destructiveness of attacks has increased, making proactive defense more critical than ever.

A Pivotal Career Moment

One of the most defining moments in Charles’ career was working under Bill Walker, a former NSA leader and one of the first recognized CISOs. “Back then, the role of a CISO wasn’t widely understood. Bill mentored me and helped shape my leadership style. That was a turning point,” Charles stated.

Debunking Cybersecurity Myths

“A lot of people think cybersecurity is like what you see in the movies,” Charles says. “But it’s really about mindset, policy, and awareness. The human element is the biggest vulnerability. It’s not just about penetration testing, it’s about helping people realize they’re targets and teaching them to be cautious.”

Career Achievements That Matter

Charles is especially proud of two major accomplishments:

  1. Worldview III Satellite Project at Ball Aerospace: He oversaw cybersecurity for the satellite from contract award to launch, including implementing a VPN solution that enabled remote launch operations. This satellite was the first to allow commercial applications like Google Maps to show Earth’s terrain shadows.

  1. CISO at United Launch Alliance (ULA): Charles led ULA to achieve a perfect SPRS score of 110, a benchmark for cybersecurity excellence in defense contracting.

Why Intrado?

Charles joined Intrado because of its mission-driven focus on public safety. “As a father, I want to use my skills to protect families. If I can help Intrado execute at the highest level, then I wake up every day with purpose.”

Building a Culture of Awareness

Charles believes that security awareness must extend beyond IT. He fosters a culture where every employee understands their role in cybersecurity. His advice? “Be aware that you are a target. Think before you click and send.”

Moving the Needle

One of Charles’ current initiatives involves advocating on Capitol Hill with partners to push for full adoption of Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), especially in rural areas. “We’re working with APCO, CTIA, NENA, and others to make sure every community is covered.”

Life Outside the Firewall

When Charles is not defending networks, he is recharging with his wife and two daughters on outdoor adventures especially camping. Charles also finds joy in mentoring youth, helping them navigate life’s challenges with curiosity and resilience.

Charles Gifford reminds us that cybersecurity is more than firewalls and encryption, it’s about people, purpose, and connection. At Intrado, we’re proud to have leaders like Charles who brings heart and vision to the mission of keeping communities safe.
